On May 29, Shaanxi Normal University held a ceremony to mark the tenth anniversary of its International School of Chinese Studies and to celebrate its 50 years of international students education, in the Jixue Hall on Yanta campus.
SNNU president Cheng Guangxu, vice president You Xuqun, officials and representatives from China''s Ministry of Education, Shaanxi provincial government, Shaanxi Provincial Educational Department, Xi''an Consulate General of Republic of Korea, Donggan Association of Kazakhstan, International Integration Foundation of Kazakhstan, Xi''an Representative Office of US Alliance of Global Education, Shaanxi Alumni Association of Singapore Nanyang Technological University, Shaanxi Pearl International Group, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Northwest University, Xidian University, Chang''an University, Xi''an Shiyou University, and Xiangyang Normal University, joined about 700 SNNU teachers and students at the ceremony.
More than 30 institutions and organizations such as the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of China''s State Council, Beijing Normal University, Taiwan Normal University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Macau University of Science and Technology, and SNNU''s Confucius Institutes at University of North Florida and University of Arizona in the U.S. sent their congratulatory messages.
ISCS dean Zhang Jiancheng welcomed the guests and gave a keynote speech. He reviewed the milestones in the half a century of SNNU''s education of international students and summarized the achievements during ISCS''s ten years history from the aspects of student cultivation, teaching service, student activities, academic research and international exchange and cooperation.
He vowed to expand cooperative relations with more foreign institutions, attract more international students, make SNNU heard in more parts of the world, and make more contributions to SNNU''s internationalization drive.
SNNU General Administrative Office director announced that Mr. He Chongben donated 150,000 RMB yuan each year to set up a scholarship for international students studying at the university. It is the fifth scholarship Mr. He has established in SNNU, after scholarships for ethnic minority students, students from poor families and creative students.
Mr. Kan Kaipei of the Foreign Affairs Office of Shaanxi Provincial Government and president Cheng unveiled the SNNU Research Center for Chinese Education at the ceremony.
Cheng welcomed the guests and wished happy birthday to ISCS teachers and students. He said education for international students was an important driving force for deepening the university''s overall reform. He hoped all faculty and staff and students of the university would join their efforts to the elevation of SNNU''s internationalization level, through concerted actions in English courses, more flexible application and admission policies, better service and care for international students.
Mr. Li Zhenhai, dean of Northwest University''s College of International Culture and Exchange, Prof. Liu Lening, dean of Confucius Institute and director of Chinese Department of Columbia University, ISCS graduate student Wang Jinhui, and Australian student Christopher O''Connor also spoke on behalf of sister institutions, teachers and students.
After the speeches, ISCS''s Chinese and foreign students put on performances to celebrate the occasion.
After the meeting, guests, teachers and students watched the Customs Show of Countries Along the One Belt and One Road (Silkroad Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road) and the Photo Exhibition by International Students Studying at SNNU, and listened to the lectures of several experts from the U.S.A. at the symposium on Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and Chinese Education, which were part of a series of activities marking the anniversary.
National and local media such as Shaanxi Satellite TV, Shaanxi TV Station, Xi''an Evening News, China Business View, People.com.cn, China News Agency covered the event.
